Hospital Infection Control Programs have become important tools for the Healthcare-Related Infection Control Committee. Surgical Site Infections (SSI) represent one of the main complications related to surgical procedures in hospital units, which generates an increase in the length of hospital stay and socioeconomic and health burdens. Objective: To evaluate the strategy of telephone search after hospital discharge of patients with Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in a university hospital. Methodology: This is a descriptive, analytical and retrospective study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach based on the analysis of notification forms of healthcare-related infections of patients undergoing clean surgery in a university hospital. The study population consisted of patients with notifications of healthcare-associated infection, aged between 18 and 90 years of both sexes, and who were admitted to the Getúlio Vargas University Hospital-AM, from January 2015 to December 2023. All sociodemographic variables (age, sex, color/race) of the individuals available in the notification forms and related to the surgical procedure (specialty involved, type of SSI, time between hospitalization and infection, and time between infection and discharge) were considered. Data collection took place from July to September 2024, in the database of the Healthcare-Related Infection Control Commission-CCIRAS. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques for categorical and quantitative variables. The results showed that the coverage of the telephone search was low throughout the period analyzed and showed a downward trend from 2020 onwards. The sociodemographic profile showed a small predominance of females and a median age of 48 years. The use of the message via the WhatsApp application is considered to have shown significant potential as a strategy for monitoring SSIs, but it needs improvements.
