SUMMARY:

The path taken by this study aims to expand discussions on inclusive practices in swimming education. Accordingly, the general objective of this study was to develop a continuing education program for Physical Education teachers who work with swimming. Specifically, the study aimed to: a) Discuss the challenges and possibilities in mediating pedagogical practices in the process of including people with disabilities; b) Reflect on the curriculum structure of the Physical Education degree (both Licentiate and Bachelor’s); c) Enable the creation and adaptation of materials to promote the participation of people with disabilities in swimming classes; and d) Experience swimming practices within an inclusive context. To achieve this, the methodological approach adopted was a critical and collaborative action research based on the theories of Thiollent (2011). Data were collected through a field diary and surveys conducted throughout the training, which included both open and closed-ended questions. The data were analyzed using content analysis (Bardin, 2009). The training intervention with the study participants was structured and systematized as follows: a) Mapping of teachers working with swimming; b) Invitation to participate in the study; c) Analysis of the questionnaire and planning of the training proposal; d) Ten in-person training sessions that included both classroom-based knowledge sharing and hands-on experiences in the pool, focusing on everyday techniques; e) Proposal for the creation of inclusive pedagogical material for swimming lessons; f) Processing and interpreting the data collected from the sessions and questionnaires. The study revealed a lack of training opportunities for teachers in general swimming instruction, and this gap is even wider when it comes to inclusive teaching approaches. It became evident that participants were motivated to bring about change through training, which contributed to a broader understanding of the concept of inclusion. We also found that gaining knowledge about disabilities, understanding the concepts of inclusion, and critically reflecting on daily pedagogical practices help foster greater familiarity and competence in implementing inclusive practices. Finally, the study highlighted gaps in teacher training—both initial and continuing—emphasizing the need to broaden discussions on inclusive Physical Education.
