SUMMARY:

Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) have intensified in recent decades, representing an oceanic phenomenon of great relevance for tropical coastal regions. This study investigates the influence of MHWs on near-surface atmospheric variables along the eastern coast of Northeastern Brazil, between Ceará and Alagoas, from 1990 to 2020. To this end, daily Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data from the OISST v2.1 product (NOAA/NCEI) and meteorological data on air temperature, relative humidity, and wind obtained from INMET stations were used. MHWs were identified according to the protocol by Hobday et al. (2016), allowing for the calculation of metrics such as frequency, intensity, duration, and cumulative intensity. The atmospheric analysis included the assessment of the coastal thermal response through statistical correlations and the calculation of the Thermal Discomfort Index (TDI). The results indicate that MHW events are associated with a consistent increase in air temperature and thermal sensation, with impacts being more pronounced in urban and densely populated stretches of the coast. The evidence reinforces the role of MHWs as modulators of the regional microclimate and highlights the need for continuous monitoring of this phenomenon in the context of climate change.
