SUMMARY:

Desertification is an increasingly present theme with interference in various sectors of society, in particular, or in the water sector. Among the effects of desertification on the soil, are the low quality and availability of water resources, which compromise crop productivity and aggravate social problems such as unemployment and the rural exodus, causing a condition of poverty. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the impacts of desertification on the hydrological response of the Seridó river watershed, in order to promote the understanding of the effects of desertification and its advances in the components of the water balance. This investigation will be carried out from hydrological modeling with the SWAT model (Soil Water Assessement Tool). In a preliminary test, to understand the methodology and familiarity with the model, two hydrological simulations of 27 years (1987-2013) were carried out, each with a different vegetation cover scenario. The first scenario consisted of a recent vegetation cover, where it was classified as a control experiment. The second scenario referred to an extreme scenario of total desertification in the basin. In these simulations the SWAT was forced with daily data from the CFSR (Climate Forecast System Reanalysis) reanalysis with a horizontal spacing of ~ 30 km, and used the databases of several projects and institutions (MapBiomas, Embrapa and SRTM) to build the watershed. The initial results indicated that the model satisfactorily simulated the average runoff pattern in the basin, which, due to the condition of exposed soil, increases and in a scenario with vegetation cover it reduces. However, improvements need to be made to obtain a better representation of the model, such as the desertification scenario in a realistic way, as well as seasonal patterns of evapotranspiration.
