SUMMARY:

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS ARE SUBJECTS OF INTEREST IN NEUROEDUCATION. LEARNING IN MARTIAL ARTS INVOLVES A PEDAGOGY OF RISK MANAGEMENT, REQUIRING EMOTIONAL CONTROL FROM LEARNERS, SUCH AS IN THE CASE OF ANXIETY. PRACTICE ORGANIZATION IS A RELEVANT TOPIC IN MOTOR BEHAVIOR, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE ECOLOGICAL CONTEXT OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, WHERE MOTOR SKILL ACQUISITION REGULARLY OCCURS. IN SPORTS INITIATION, MOTOR PERFORMANCE IS DEPENDENT ON THE MODULATION OF ANXIETY, AS EVIDENCED BY THE YERKES-DODSON LAW. THE NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS TO STRESS AND THE RESULTS OF MOTOR LEARNING UNDER DIFFERENT PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES ARE STILL POORLY UNDERSTOOD IN THE SPECIFIC CONTEXT OF CAPOEIRA INITIATION, AN AFRO-BRAZILIAN MOVEMENT CULTURE. THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF A CAPOEIRA TEACHING PROGRAM FOR UNIVERSITY BEGINNERS ON MOTOR LEARNING AND ANXIETY MODULATION. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS DEVELOPED, OF THE RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL TYPE, WITH ADULT PARTICIPANTS (19-55 YEARS OF AGE, X̄ = 27.08, SD = 9.4) OF BOTH SEXES, SUBDIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS RANDOMLY SELECTED BY SEX, TIME OF EXPERIENCE WITH CAPOEIRA, AND ANXIETY TRAIT PROFILE: 1) TREATMENT GROUP, OPEN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH (N=9); 2) TREATMENT GROUP, CLOSED PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH (N=14). BOTH GROUPS PARTICIPATED IN A 12-SESSION PROGRAM OF 50 MINUTES EACH, WITH 2 WEEKLY MEETINGS. A REPEATED MEASURES MODEL ALLOWED FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE DEPENDENT VARIABLES: 1) STATE ANXIETY, WHICH WAS MEASURED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE CAPOEIRA "RODAS" (CIRCLES) 1 AND 3, WHICH TOOK PLACE IN LESSONS NUMBER 4 AND 12, RESPECTIVELY; 2) DERMAL CONDUCTANCE WAS MEASURED BEFORE AND AFTER THE 12-SESSION PROGRAM, IN A CAPOEIRA RODA PROTOCOL, USING A POLYGRAPH CONFIGURED AT 10 HZ; 3) MOTOR LEARNING, WHICH WAS MEASURED USING A STRUCTURED CAPOEIRA INITIATION INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY AN EXPERIENCED CAPOEIRA PRACTITIONER IN A BLINDED MANNER. DATA ANALYSES WERE PERFORMED USING PARAMETRIC AND NON-PARAMETRIC TECHNIQUES: TYPE III ANOVA FOR DERMAL CONDUCTANCE DATA; SLOPE COEFFICIENT TEST; MANN-WHITNEY U TEST FOR COMPARISON BETWEEN INDEPENDENT GROUPS; WILCOXON TEST FOR PAIRED SAMPLES (Α= 0.05). THE RESULTS SHOWED MOTOR LEARNING IN BOTH INITIATION PROGRAMS (OPEN AND CLOSED PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES). WHEN COMPARING THE TREATMENTS, THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN FAVOR OF THE OPEN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH GROUP VIA THE SLOPE COEFFICIENT TEST, ESPECIALLY IN THE TACTICAL DIMENSION. REGARDING THE STATE OF ANXIETY, THE SELF-REPORTED RESULTS SHOWED NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GROUPS. INTRA-GROUP ANALYSIS REVEALED AN INCREASE IN STATE ANXIETY IN THE CONTROL GROUP BETWEEN CAPOEIRA RODA 1 (LESSON 4) AND RODA 3 (LESSON 12). THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE WITH DERMAL CONDUCTANCE DATA IN THE CAPOEIRA RODA PROTOCOL INDICATED BETTER ADAPTATION TO STRESSFUL CONDITIONS AT THE MOMENT OF HIGHEST RISK IN THE GAME WHEN COMPARING THE TWO TREATMENTS AT PRE- AND POST-TEST MOMENTS. THERE WAS BETTER MODULATION OF THE ANXIETY STATE IN THE GROUP THAT EXPERIENCED THE OPEN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH.WE CONCLUDE THAT THE OPEN PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH TO TEACHING CAPOEIRA PROMOTES MOTOR LEARNING AND MODULATES THE ANXIETY STATE IN UNIVERSITY BEGINNERS.
