The mobilization of rural communities by recognition as quilombos remnants, a legal figure created by the 1988 Constitution, involves a complex process of identity construction that has the social communication as one of the keys to its achievement. After all, it is essential that these groups have the ability to symbolically materialize and communicate the identity they claim. In the community of Capoeiras-RN, we investigate how these communicational and symbolic processes are structured in local cultural manifestations, seen as open systems capable of incorporating new information and recoding their repertoires in order to legitimize a quilombola collective identity, above all in the sensitive self-recognition of those who assume this difference.
