SUMMARY:

Sheep production systems in the Northeast region are predominantly pasture-based; however, the full expression of the animals' genetic potential is limited by multiple factors, notably the composition of tropical pastures. While concentrate supplementation can enhance the performance of grazing sheep, its adoption by producers depends on economic attractiveness and feasibility. Given the significant cost associated with the protein fraction of concentrates, it is hypothesized that alternative protein sources could be more economically attractive, thereby improving the economic viability of the finishing phase. Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different protein sources on intake, performance, bio-economics, and carcass characteristics of grazing sheep. The experiment was conducted at the research facility of the Forage and Ruminant Production Study Group (GEFORP) at the Jundiaí Agricultural School, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Thirty-two male Santa Inês sheep, with an average initial weight of 31.0 ± 7.7 kg, were used in a completely randomized experimental design. Four protein sources served as the primary ingredient in the concentrate supplement—DDG, corn gluten feed (21% protein), cottonseed meal, and soybean meal—resulting in eight replicates per experimental treatment.
