SUMMARY:

The environmental impact generated by the economic growth of countries has raised questions about reconciling current development models with nature preservation. Through the STIRPAT methodology (Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology), this study aims to investigate the environmental impact of population, affluence, and technology variables in selected groups of countries with high, middle, and low per capita income during the period from 1990 to 2021. The main objective of the research is to analyze which factors drive environmental impact in countries with different levels of development and to what extent productive efficiency can mitigate environmental problems. To achieve the proposed objectives, this research employed the PMG-ARDL methodology for the estimation of econometric models, which allows for analyzing short- and long-term relationships between variables, as well as capturing the heterogeneity of panel units that may have different temporal dynamics. In light of the above, the hypothesis to be validated is that the drivers of environmental impact have distinct effects depending on the country's level of development. For all groups, it can be stated that the affluence factor plays a significant role in determining the drivers of impact, particularly as the economic growth of these countries occurs through productive activities that intensively utilize natural resources. Regarding low-income countries, the main driver of environmental impact was population. In the case of high-income countries used in the sample, no evidence was found that the effect of productive efficiency can overcome the scale effect, as evidenced by the positive and significant sign of per capita energy consumption.
