SUMMARY:

The disorderly use of land is currently one of the major contributors to
environmental issues, with various reports of conflict areas and indicators of
environmental degradation, such as river pollution in hydrographic basins throughout
the country. The same literature points out that one of the ways to address the problem
is by seeking to understand the functioning of the ecosystem of interest through geo-
environmental studies, such as natural and environmental vulnerability assessments,
whose results can contribute to proactive solutions for environmental restoration,
territorial planning, and sustainable use of natural resources. In this context, the general
objective of this research is to investigate the environmental vulnerability of the
Boqueirão River Hydrographic Basin, using both laboratory and field data, to map
vulnerability indicators that can provide subsidies for the reorganization and
development of public policies and territorial planning and management projects for the
BHB. To achieve this, statistical techniques, image processing, and analysis will be
employed. This has enabled the generation of maps of the physical environment of the
basin in the first stage. The results revealed that 0.72% of the area of the Boqueirão
River Basin in Rio Grande do Norte is vulnerable, located around the Boqueirão
Lagoon and in the urban area of Touros, RN, with a vulnerability scale ranging from 2.4
to 2.7. About 12.92% of the area is classified as moderately stable/vulnerable, 52.61%
as moderately vulnerable, and 33.75% as stable areas, distributed throughout the basin.
The occupation process has intensified in recent years, advancing towards the interior of
the basin due to the implementation of agribusiness, which has increased pressure on
water supply. This analysis is an important attempt to generate new information and
create instruments that contribute to the environmental planning of the basin.
