URBAN EXPANSION, LEGAL CONFLICTS AND SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION: SCENARIOS AND IMPACTS IN THE TERRITORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ZONE 09.

KEY WORDS:

Urban expansion – environmental impacts – environmental degradation – socio-environmental vulnerability – geoenvironment – hydrology.

SUMMARY:

The research presented sought something beyond the simple perception that Environmental Protection Zone 09 goes through constant processes of degradation in its ecosystem. We sought to historicize the genesis of these threats and how they are not limited to the territory of this environmentally protected area. This is an area already extensively studied by academia due to its environmental importance and ecological fragility. To this end, using historical images from the Landsat collection and classification of use and occupation, it was found that rapid urban expansion, caused by population growth and real estate speculation, brings risks to the aquifer system that feeds the fluo-lacustrine geosystem of ZPA 09, formed by the Rio Doce and several connecting lagoons. Since, in the neighborhoods that share the territory of ZPA 09 there is no domestic effluent sanitation system. Internally in ZPA 09, it was noticed that the processes of environmental degradation are still constant, as we observe the deposit of solid waste, deforestation and growth of occupations, without the public administration and far from the consent of technical bodies. With the process of occupation in areas of hydrological outcrop, combined with the silting of the riverbed, we have the occurrence of strong socio-environmental disorders, with flooding and inundation of socioeconomically vulnerable communities. These threats become even more imminent with climate change. The present study also noticed a strong ecological potential as it contains a set of environmental protection areas that cover a large part of the north coast along with the mangrove areas of the Potengi River.
