SUMMARY:

The present study was based on four objectives, each corresponding to a chapter: 1) describe and compare the metagenomic diversity of the phytoplankton community, with emphasis on cyanobacteria, with the diversity obtained by the traditional method by optical microscopy; 2) explain how the social formulation of environmental risks tied to potentially toxic algal blooms in reservoirs in the Piancó-Piranhas-Açu Watershed occurred; 3) validate the Instrument for Planning and Didactic Evaluation of Socioscientific Issues (IPADQSC), as instructional material to support teachers in the planning and evaluation of teaching sequences focused on education and expansion of scientific literacy; 4) evaluate how a teacher training course on socioscientific issues related to the water theme contributes to the understanding and application of these concepts in the construction of teaching sequences, from the perspective of scientific literacy and environmental sustainability. The total DNA was extracted from Boqueirão de Parelhas and Passagem das Traíras reservoirs, obtained by filtering 100 liters of water in vertical and horizontal drags, so that the genetic material was sequenced and analyzed with the help of the MG-RAST tool. For the risk assessment, linked to cyanobacterial blooms, a literature review was carried out using key words, with a time frame between 1996 and 2020. The IPADQSQ was elaborated according to the theoretical assumptions of the approaches of Socioscientific Questions and Investigative Teaching. For validation, questionnaires were applied to elementary school biology science teachers, masters in science education students, and university professors. In the training course, held with 107 teachers in initial and continuing education, the IPADQSC was used as a resource to help teachers in the elaboration of didactic sequences based on QSC. The analysis of phytoplankton composition by metagenomics detected 238 taxa, distributed in 13 groups, with an abundance of over 90% cyanobacteria. The literature highlights several risks associated with eutrophication: contamination of water by cyanotoxins, ecological changes in the aquatic community, changes in limnological patterns of water bodies, and harm to human health due to the use of contaminated water. In response to the questionnaire, the teachers were unanimous in stating that the IPADQSC reaches the objective for which it was proposed. Thus, 21 teaching sequences on the water theme using the QSC approach were prepared by the teachers participating in the course. The results show that the teachers understand the fundamental concepts of the QSC approach and scientific literacy. Thus, indicators of scientific literacy emerged: ability to understand scientific terms and knowledge; recognize the CTSA relationships and implications, analyze scientific controversies in the search to propose solutions to real problems of everyday life, considering aspects of the nature of science; use of scientific language, considering moral, ethical and political factors to construct arguments based on science and considering aspects of its nature to act in society and in decision making. All these indicators were present to some extent in the didactic sequences. A comparison between the two identification techniques showed a higher phytoplankton diversity when the metagenomic identification technique was used, especially for the picoplankton taxa, in detriment of the traditional identification by optical microscopy. The expansion of pedagogical training is recommended in order to mitigate the formative weaknesses and thus contribute to overcoming the challenges that prevent the application of the CSF in pedagogical practice.
