SUMMARY:

Introduction: Soccer is characterized as an intermittent physical activity that makes specific use of the body's various energy sources. Specific physiological adjustments are required at multiple levels to meet increased muscular demands and the need to dissipate heat to achieve thermal homeostasis. During high-intensity exercise, cutaneous blood flow (CBF) is reduced—via cutaneous vasoconstriction—to prioritize oxygen delivery to skeletal muscles, thereby causing a drop in skin temperature (Tsk). Regarding athletic performance, movement analysis during a match indicates that fatigue occurs in distinct stages, manifesting as a decline in player work intensity toward the end of the game. In this context, analyzing muscle fatigue indicators based on body thermal gradients and muscle temperature patterns can be highly valuable in soccer, as it provides data on Tsk behavior and its relationship with muscle performance during exercise.Objective: to examine the relationship between TsK and the muscle performance of professional soccer players during a fatigue protocol. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 20 male professional soccer players from the Brazilian fourth division at the start of the preseason. They will undergo surface skin temperature assessment using a T-360 camera (FLIR Systems, USA)—featuring a 320 x 240-pixel infrared resolution, a temperature range of -20 to 120°C, thermal sensitivity <0.05°C, and ±2% accuracy—positioned perpendicularly at a distance of 1 meter from the area being evaluated (the volunteer's thigh). During this assessment, participants will perform a fatigue protocol on an isokinetic dynamometer consisting of 30 maximal concentric knee flexion-extension contractions at an angular velocity of 240°/s, encouraged by strong verbal commands throughout the test. Statistical analyses will be performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, version 20.0 (SPSS, IBM®, Armonk, NY, USA). Sample characterization will involve descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), and data normality will be assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Mean values for skin temperature, PT (Peak Torque), TW (Total Work), and P (Power) will be calculated for each volunteer across the 30 repetitions. Subsequently, the relationship between the mean temperature and muscle performance variables will be examined using Pearson's correlation test. Results will be interpreted as very strong (r ≥0.90), strong (r ≥0.70 and <0.90), moderate (r ≥0.40 and <0.70), weak (r ≥0.10 and <0.40), and negligible (r ≤0.10) (SCHOBER et al., 2018). Additionally, a paired t-test will be used to analyze the behavior of the variables during the fatigue protocol, comparing the first repetition with the subsequent 29 repetitions for all variables. All analyses will use a significance level of 0.05. Expected results: TsK is expected to exhibit behavior similar to muscle performance, with a decline in indicators.
