SUMMARY:

Introduction: Early Sensorimotor Stimulation (SMS) promotes typical neurosensorimotor development (NSMD) and minimizes the harmful effects to which preterm infants are exposed in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). The adoption of structured protocols enhances care practices and ensures safe, evidence-based interventions. In this context, family participation, grounded in Family-Centered Care (FCC), amplifies the effects of SMS by promoting bonding, emotional regulation, and greater responsiveness to interventions. Thus, actively integrating families into the development and implementation of SMS protocols contributes to more humanized, collaborative care aligned with the needs of the preterm newborn and their family. Objective: To develop, validate, and implement an SMS protocol for preterm newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit, with the co-participation of caregivers and healthcare professionals, analyzing readiness for change and professional training. Methods: This is a mixed-methods implementation study conducted in two phases. The first phase involved the collaborative development of the SMS protocol through focus groups with caregivers and professionals, followed by content validation by experts using the Delphi method and calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI ≥ 0.78). Qualitative analysis was performed using Bardin’s thematic content analysis. The second phase consisted of theoretical-practical training of physiotherapists in a NICU, with evaluation of readiness for change through semi-structured interviews, application of the MPOC-SP instrument, and a satisfaction scale. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS (version 20.0), with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Results: In the first phase, 15 individuals participated in the development of the protocol, including caregivers and professionals from different regions of the country. The thematic analysis highlighted key aspects such as institutional barriers, the importance of family participation, the need for professional guidance, and stimulation practices in the hospital environment. The developed protocol demonstrated adequate content validity, with satisfactory CVI for all items after adjustments. In the training phase, eight professionals participated, with higher mean scores observed in the domains of respectful treatment and interpersonal sensitivity of the MPOC-SP, and lower mean scores in the domain of providing general information. Professionals’ reports indicated good acceptance of the protocol and potential for incorporation into clinical practice, although challenges related to care routines and service organization were identified. Final Considerations: The study demonstrated that the integration of scientific evidence, professional training, and family participation promotes the standardization of practices, caregiver empowerment, and improved developmental outcomes in infants. Despite its limitations, the findings contribute to the advancement of implementation science in neonatology and reinforce the need for strategies that promote more humanized, collaborative, and family-centered care.
