SUMMARY:

Introduction: The one-repetition maximum (1RM) test is recommended to guide resistance exercise load prescriptions; however, it may not be safe to use it in individuals undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R). Thus, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) emerges as a safer and easier alternative; however, its validity and reliability still need to be confirmed for this population. Objective: To evaluate the validity and intra-subject reliability of perceived exertion scales for monitoring resistance exercise load in individuals undergoing ACL-R. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that will include a sample of 44 individuals who are between the 13th and 17th postoperative weeks of ACL-R. The volunteers will undergo a 7–10RM test on the horizontal leg press and knee extension exercises to predict the 1RM, which will be performed unilaterally on both limbs. Between 40 and 72 hours later, RPE will be collected through a set of 10 repetitions at 30%, 50%, and 70% of predicted 1RM on separate days. Each intensity will be repeated once for reliability analysis. The order of exercises, limbs, and loads will be randomized. Participants will be blinded to the load they are lifting and immediately after each set will report their RPE on the scales. Statistical analysis will include correlation tests and, if possible, linear regression to validate the use of the scales in this population. The intraclass correlation coefficient will be applied to determine the reproducibility of the responses, and a mean comparison test will be used to compare RPE between limbs. Expected results: The scales are expected to be valid and reproducible, enabling their use in clinical practice to monitor resistance exercise load during rehabilitation of patients with ACL-R.
