SUMMARY:

Capuchin monkeys (family Cebidae; genera Cebus and Sapajus) are models of great interest for studies of sociality, as they represent the new world monkeys with the biggest degree of encephalization. This is reflected in elaborated behavioral profiles (such as the use of tools) and complex social behaviors, with the formation of branched hierarchies and coalitions. Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) are the second-most encountered primates in Centers of Triage and Rehabilitation of Wild Animals (CETRAS), representing a challenge for the ex situ management of these animals in these institutions. In this reasearch we will analyze data gathered from 107 captive capuchins kept in the CETRAS-RN, between 2018 and 2024 by observers from the CO-LAB (PPg Psicobio-UFRN) research group. The databases include behavioral information, personality profiles, proximity indexes between animals, their individual characteristics and composition of social groups. In this project, we will conduct a longitudinal study of the sociality of these animals through Social Network Analysis (SNA), testing hypotheses about the correlation between social network indexes and sex, age, hierarchical position and personality of each individual. This set of statistical tools will aid in a bigger understanding of the processes of structuring of social relations, furthering knowledge on comparative sociality and methodologies on animal handling.
