SUMMARY:
In the first chapter of this study we sought to evaluate the theta rhythm of REM sleep and phasic REM sleep in areas of the limbic system, as well as the waveform of the theta rhythm of REM sleep in response to fatigue tests performed before and after high-intensity treadmill training. Our data show that exercise-induced fatigue affects REM sleep and the properties of the limbic system’s theta rhythm differently, before and after training.
Next, we present the manuscript of a scientific article in preparation for submission in which we discuss the effect of locomotion speed on the frequency and waveform of the hippocampal theta rhythm. In this work, we conclude that the instantaneous speed and not the acceleration of the animals determines the frequency of the theta rhythm and, moreover, that the waveform of the theta rhythm cycles becomes more asymmetric with the speed of locomotion.
All together, we verify effects of intense physical exercise on the waveform of the theta rhythm during locomotion and during REM sleep that corroborate previous findings and deepen our understanding of the role of this rhythm in the limbic system.
