SUMMARY:

Any and all alcohol consumption during pregnancy compromises normal fetal development and may contribute to physical, cognitive, and behavioral deficits. Disorders resulting from prenatal ethanol exposure are encompassed under the term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), which has been the focus of research for decades. In FASD, morphological or neurobehavioral changes are not always evident or clearly associated with prenatal ethanol exposure, which hinders both diagnosis and treatment—crucial steps in mitigating the effects. In this context, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a growing model for investigating the effects of alcohol administered during embryonic development, given its controlled exposure and extra-uterine development. Thus, it represents an important model for understanding the mechanisms and effects of ethanol on both somatic and mental development. This research aims to investigate the effects of embryonic alcohol exposure on adult zebrafish behavior and whether such effects are transmitted to subsequent generations. To this end, FASD will be induced in the animals, which will be monitored at different stages of ontogenetic development to assess behavioral, cognitive, and molecular effects. These findings may contribute to the detection, diagnosis, and understanding of FASD in humans.
