SUMMARY:

White-tufted marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are a species of neotropical primate native to
northeastern Brazil, ranging from the Caatinga to the Atlantic Forest and with many biological and
social features similar to humans, such as cooperative breeding and gregarious habits, combined
with a wide vocal repertoire. In addition to being targets of interest in biomedical research due to
their similar biology and ease of being maintained in captivity, the vocalizations of these animals
have recently been extensively studied with increasing evidence of learning mechanisms and vocal
plasticity. However, few studies evaluate the natural context in which they occur in the species and
most of them focus on the animals' childhood and adult stages. Our research investigated variations
in the vocal configurations of four types of vocalizations in juvenile marmosets over six months in a
natural environment. We compared these variations with the vocalizations of adult marmosets,
seeking to understand the ontogeny of these individuals and the social context of call usage. We did
not observe significant variations in the parameters of the vocalizations analyzed in juveniles
throughout the study, nor noticeable influences of a vocal feedback reinforcement mechanism for
young individuals. However, we observed differences between “cry” and “phee” frequency values
between juveniles and adults, with a tendency for juvenile averages to approach those of adults. Our
data also confirm the presence of vocalizations from infant to adult stages in marmosets and show
variations in the frequencies of use and context observed for all vocalizations. These subtle and
gradual variations in vocal parameters and the use of vocalizations observed in juvenile marmosets
suggest that despite a vocal profile that can largely be explained by biological development, social
experiences must be important for the maturation and contextualization of the marmosets' main
vocalizations.
