SUMMARY:

Selaginella convoluta is a species of increasing relevance within the biodiversity of the Caatinga, exhibiting notable desiccation-tolerance properties. Recent investigations involving this plant have further explored these characteristics through proteomic and metabolomic approaches, highlighting a remarkable richness in phenolic compounds. Building upon previous findings regarding the pharmaceutical potential of S. convoluta, ongoing studies have focused on evaluating its biological potential using the alternative model zebrafish (Danio rerio), as well as continuing the application of omics tools and in vitro cultivation strategies to investigate biosynthetic pathways, alongside approaches for the isolation of natural products. Considering the growing use of the zebrafish model in natural product research, the implications of the interaction between these fields are also discussed, using the study of alkaloids in zebrafish as a reference framework. Through an embryotoxicity assay in zebrafish, the hydrophilic fraction obtained from the aerial parts of the S. convoluta extract demonstrated a safe profile under acute exposure conditions, while mortality was observed after four hours under continuous exposure. The fraction was also evaluated for its effects on learning and memory processes using an associative conditioning test, as well as for its potential protective effects against alcohol-induced oxidative stress. Fish treated with the fraction exhibited significantly higher learning performance compared to controls. Additionally, the application of centrifugal partition chromatography for the isolation of natural products from S. convoluta was assessed, together with initiatives involving micropropagation and genomic analysis of the species. The biflavonoid amentoflavone was successfully isolated with a yield of 1.36%. Experimental data composing the draft genome of S. convoluta were also obtained. Taken together, these results support the continuation of research on S. convoluta, aiming to further strengthen its relevance in pharmaceutical and biotechnological contexts while also emphasizing the importance of its native habitat, the Caatinga biome.
