SUMMARY:

This research seeks to answer: how can Big Tech interfere in the social adherence of political movements by using Big Data in the communicational development of popular demonstrations, transfiguring symbols of national identity into objects of partisan political campaigning, more specifically September 7, 2021 in Brazil? The aim of this research is to identify whether - and how - Big Data was used to influence social adherence to the September 7, 2021 celebrations and its possible repercussions on the 2022 presidential campaign in Brazil. The corpus of the research consisted of an analysis of the case that marked the 2022 presidential election campaign: the political use of Brazil's Independence Day, September 7, 2021. As this is a research project in the field of Communication, we chose to analyze this event using Ciro Marcondes Filho's metaporo method, created to “accompany the dynamics, versatility and continuous mutability” of this area, which also implies the definitions of Communicational Event and Continuous Atmospheric Media, by the same author. The study will be developed using the Psychology Research Methodology called Thematic Analysis, and will be based on the investigation of this event and the metrics used to measure the impact and reach of sponsored ads created as a result of it and present in the Ads Library of the social network Meta, formerly Facebook, presented in the report Stop the Theft 2.0: how Meta is subverting Brazilian democracy, by the American NGO Sum of Us, which is linked to an online community interested in holding large corporations accountable for their actions on the environment, workers' rights and democracy, according to its own definition. The report was developed between August 20 and 26, 2022 and sought to check the use of September 7 in favor of then-candidate Jair Bolsonaro on social networks, in an allusion to the 'Stop the Robbery' movement, which grew in 2020 in the United States. The expected result of this research is to understand how the use of Big Data in the communicational development of the September 7, 2021 celebrations in Brazil may have been used for political campaign purposes in the 2022 presidential election in Brazil, circumventing the predefined rules of period and how these campaigns should be developed.
