SUMMARY:

This research examines the Mail Art movement from a local perspective, focusing on the Northeastern triangle comprising the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, and Pernambuco. The presence of Mail Art in this region spans the turbulent historical period of the military dictatorship and its transition phase (1964–1985)—marked by a gradual political opening—and the subsequent redemocratization of Brazil. The methodological process employs a critical-historical approach and documentary research. As the study originates in the Brazilian Northeast, it was essential to recognize that visual arts production in the region is intrinsically linked to the aesthetic-political construction of the region's imagery (Albuquerque, 2011). This analytical perspective offers greater insight into the dynamics and influences affecting artists during this crucial period of change in Brazil. Thus, the research primarily aims to highlight the diversity of Mail Art production and the network of Northeastern artists formed through this practice. The investigation seeks to reshape perceptions of the Northeast, a region that long remained on the margins of what was considered contemporary art.
