PAGES: 60
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Fonoaudiologia
SUMMARY:

Objective: To map the instruments, validated or not, used in the literature for assessing oral reading of words and pseudowords in students aged 6 to 14 years (Study 1) and to apply a national instrument for assessing oral reading of words and pseudowords in students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades of Elementary School I across different regions of Brazil (Study 2). Method: For Study 1, a scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The research question was developed using the "PCC" (Population, Concept, and Context) strategy. Searches for relevant studies were conducted in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scopus, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), EMBASE, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and LiVIVO databases, using terms in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, depending on the database. Studies that used instruments for assessing and/or monitoring oral reading of words and pseudowords in students aged 6 to 14 years and 11 months, in clinical or school settings, were included. For Study 2, the IDB Portuguese application was used with 470 students from the northeast, south, and southeast regions. Partial Results: In Study 1, analysis of 16 included studies revealed 11 assessment instruments with stimuli varying in syllabic complexity, regularity, frequency, and length, including regular and irregular words of high and low frequency, short and long words, and pseudowords that follow the rules of the test language. However, there was limited information on the validation of the instruments used in these studies. Study 2 is still underway. Conclusion: In Study 1, the lack of information on the validation of assessment instruments may affect the accuracy of results regarding word and pseudoword reading among students. The research highlights the need to develop more studies focused on the creation and validation of instruments, as well as additional validations of existing instruments, taking into account the country’s cultural and linguistic diversity, with important implications for future educational practices.
