SUMMARY:

The research investigates the relationship between the use of non-invasive mechanical ventilation by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and the characteristics of oral motor skills in premature newborns, structured in two studies: a scoping review, aimed at synthesizing the available evidence on the topic, and an observational, longitudinal and ambispective study. Data collection, still ongoing in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, comprises a retrospective stage, carried out in 2024, and a prospective stage, started in 2026, including premature newborns with a gestational age between 28 and 34 weeks, clinically stable and under minimum CPAP parameters. Assessments are carried out at two different times: during the use of CPAP and after removal of respiratory support, using the Preterm Oral Feeding Readiness Assessment Scale (POFRAS). To date, 28 newborns have been included, with a median gestational age at birth of 31.5 weeks and median birth weight of 1,612 g. An increase in the median POFRAS score was observed, from 27.0 during the use of CPAP to 32.0 after the removal of respiratory support, approaching or reaching the cutoff point established for feeding readiness. The findings are preliminary and should be complemented after the collection is completed, seeking to investigate the evolution of oral feeding readiness and the characteristics of non-nutritive sucking throughout hospitalization, as well as their relationship with the duration of CPAP use and the transition to exclusive oral feeding.
