SUMMARY:

Among speech fluency disorders, developmental stuttering is the most prevalent. It begins in childhood, usually in the pre-school phase, and can be characterized by excessive stuttering disfluencies. Although stuttering is not associated with language disorders or intellectual impairment, its presence tends to have a negative impact on quality of life and self-image as a speaker. This impact usually interferes with the communicative performance of the stutterer, and can compromise their academic, professional and emotional performance. As school is usually the first place where children socialize, it is there that stuttering is often noticed or its impact on the life of a child who stutters is perceived. Education professionals therefore play a fundamental role in the lives of these people. However, often, due to a lack of knowledge, they react inappropriately when faced with a student who stutters, which can contribute to the student's exposure and generate even more anxiety in speaking situations. Based on this reality, this research aims to investigate the effect of a training course for education professionals on speech fluency disorders. To meet this objective, a short course was developed for students and education professionals on speech fluency disorders. The course is offered through the Virtual Learning Environment of UFRN and is self-instructional. The content is organized into seven sequential modules. To collect the data, two questionnaires were administered at different times, before and after the course, in order to compare the results. One of these questionnaires assesses knowledge about stuttering and the other assesses the attitude that education professionals have towards the family and the stutterer in the school environment. Based on the data collected, we intend to evaluate the effectiveness of the course in question and contribute to the demystification of stuttering.
