RESUMO:

Children hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit are subject to numerous invasive and painful procedures to ensure their survival, which requires nursing professionals more complex care combined with strategies that minimize the suffering of this clientele. The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter is a technology that emerges as a strategy for the humanization of care, as it enables safe and prolonged venous access. Therefore, the use of this catheter requires knowledge, dexterity, and skill throughout the nursing team, which requires discussions and training to improve practice and reduce occurrences that compromise the permanence of this device, so that the child can enjoy all its benefits safely until the end of your treatment. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention for nurses and nursing technicians of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in reducing non-elective removal of the Peripheral Insertion Central Catheter. Method: The study is a quantitative approach, using the quasi-experimental method. The study scenario will be the Pediatric ICU of Hospital Universitário Onofre Lopes, with the nursing staff as participants. Initially, the quantitative removal of this device will be performed due to complications, then there will be educational intervention, with emphasis on preventive measures and management of its complications, and then there will be a comparison of catheter loss rates before and after educational intervention, as well as analysis if there was a difference in the level of knowledge through the application of questionnaire. Data regarding the reasons for catheter removal will be collected through the catheter registry book from the research scenario. Expected Outcomes: The research will conduct an educational intervention to contribute to adherence to safe PICC handling and maintenance measures to reduce complications and the number of unplanned catheter removals so that our children can enjoy all the benefits of this device with greater comfort, safety, effectiveness in therapy and lower cost for service.
