RESUMO:

Introduction - Interactive Spaced Education (ISE) is a teaching tool consisting of two components: the assessment component, comprising multiple-choice questions and/or short answers, and the educational component, which provides immediate feedback to the student’s response, with a brief explanation on the subject. The aim of this study was to assess improved learning in pulmonology of undergraduate students at a university in Brazil, considering the percentage of correct answers obtained as interference factor in this learning.

Methods – A random studyinvolving131 students from the fourth year of medicine was conducted. After a pre-test with 20 multiple-choice questions, participants received ISE questionnaires encompassing four areas divided into two modules: basic (obstructive respiratory diseases and respiratory infections) and advanced (pulmonaryneoplasia and respiratory failure), twice a week, for 12 weeks. During the same period, all students received this content by the conventional method in the respiratory system diseases course. After 12 weeks, they were submitted to a post-test containing the same subjects as the pre-test. According to the percentage of correct responses, students were divided into two groups: G1 - answered 50% or more ISE questions correctly and G2 – answered less than 50% correctly. Statistical analysis compared the mean scores obtained in the two groups, using the Mann-Whitney test.

Results -  G1 and G2 had 76 and 55 students, respectively. Cognitive knowledge assessed by the pre-test was similar between the groups. In the post-test, there was a statistically significant difference in favor of G1 (7.33 ± 1.16) compared to G2 (6.64 ± 1.22), p = 0.005.

Conclusion – We conclude that the ISE enhanced pulmonology learning in fourth-year medical students. It may be a useful option for increasing the cognitive capacity of undergraduate medical students.
