SUMMARY:

The sanctuary is one of the most significant elements of religious tourism, towards which different social dynamics converge. Considering the current moment experienced by the sanitary crisis of COVID-19, it is pertinent to verify how the tourist-economic and sociocultural dynamics were affected in these sacred spaces of strong touristic representation. Thus, the ongoing research aims to analyze the transformations and permanencies experienced in religious sanctuaries in the Northeast in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical-conceptual path is supported by the concepts of religious tourism, sanctuary and sacred place. With regard to the methodological paths traced, the study approach is qualitative. The empirical field is composed of representative and touristic sanctuaries in the states of Bahia (Sanctuary of Bom Jesus da Lapa), Ceará (Parish-Sanctuary of São Francisco das Chagas) and Piauí (Parish-Sanctuary of Santa Cruz dos Milagres). The research strategies and instruments include bibliographic, documental and field research, through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with ecclesiastical representatives, government and visitors. The method of analysis that will lead to the interpretation of the data is dialectical. Data analysis will be through content analysis, in an interpretive perspective. At the end of the research, it is expected to contribute to studies on religious tourism by analyzing the main disruptions and permanencies imposed by the pandemic and how actors give new meaning to their practices and remodel sacred places.
