RESUMO:

Culture is an element present in each individual which characterizes it as belonging to a certain society, period and space. This factor can be externalized through cultural heritage, being material or immaterial. This element contributes to motivate people to move from their places of origin to experience a reality different from their own and to know some places that stand out for valuing their history. In this way, cities that have this potential for cultural tourism use this opportunity to promote the activity and promote this exchange. This is the case of Areia, located in the region of Brejo Paraibano, in the state of Paraíba. The only historical urban nucleus of the state, it has as one of its main activities the tourism, through the visitation to its historical buildings, museums and mills producing cachaça and rapadura. With this emphasis, the tourism activity has been generating transformations in the city and, to investigate this context, the main objective of the research is to analyze if the tourism activity and the actions carried out in your favor have contributed to the development of Areia. As a methodological procedure, the research is characterized as being exploratory and descriptive, in which the methods of observation and interview for qualitative field research were used. Through the data collected and the perception of local agents, it was possible to understand that Areia is not yet a consolidated destination, however, in recent years, activity has been generating a steady stream of people in the city and generating opportunities, especially for businessmen and part of the population. However, it is a historic city that has great potential and that has many possibilities of development, both with regard to tourism as well as the structure of the city.
