RESUMO:
This study aims to investigate the interrelationships between some factors that can influence the resident's support for the development of tourism in Coastal Destinations. As initial latent variables, the dimensions "local image", "attachment of the resident to the community" and "impacts caused by tourism, as well as the sociodemographic characteristics of the population were used. The study was conducted with the resident community of Pipa Beach (Tibau do Sul / RN), an internationally known destination. For that, an exploratory-descriptive research was developed, with quantitative approach, characterized as a cross-sectional Survey. The sample process was probabilistic, with the subject chosen in a simple random procedure. The data collection intrument was the form, elaborated in metric scale of 10 points, based on the Likert approach. The data analysis was based on descriptive statistics, factorial analysis and structural equations modeling. Preliminary results indicate that resident´s support for the tourism development in coastal destinations can be affected by sociodemographic characteristics, such as gender, age, level of education, length of residence in the community and level of employment relationship with tourism activity. It was also verified that the socio-environmental impacts perceived by the residents, due to the tourist activity, are highly influential dimensions of the resident's propensity to support the development of tourism in the community.
