SUMMARY:

ntroduction: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic-degenerative disorders in the entire world population, especially affecting women. Among the joints that support body weight, the knee is the region most affected by osteoarthritis, with a prevalence of 40% in the general population. Such a condition triggers pain, joint stiffness and physical dysfunction, which has a considerable impact on the quality of life of individuals. As a non-pharmacological therapeutic approach for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OAJ), cupping therapy has been widely used to control painful symptoms. However, there is still a lack of scientific evidence regarding its effects on this condition. The low methodological quality among clinical trials published with OAJ preclude its use in practice, especially due to the lack of a group of simulated suction cups. Objective: To evaluate the effects of cupping therapy on pain control, function and quality of life in individuals with OAJ. Methods: This is a randomized, blind placebo-controlled clinical trial. 54 women diagnosed with OAJ will be recruited, based on the clinical criteria of the American College of Rheumatology and randomly allocated into two groups (27 per group): suction cup (application of real cupping therapy) and suction cup-sham (application of simulated cupping therapy). The intervention will be carried out for 10 minutes, once a week, for 6 consecutive weeks, totaling 6 sessions. Both groups will be evaluated at three times: before and immediately after the end of the intervention and 4 weeks after the end of the intervention (follow-up). The analyzed outcomes will be: pain intensity (numerical pain scale), physical function (WOMAC questionnaire; tests going up / down stairs, fast walking in 40 m and sitting up in 30 s), quality of life (SF-6 questionnaire ), global perception of recovery and consumption of medicines. For proper statistical analysis of the results, the normality of the data will be assessed and parametric or non-parametric tests will be used. Finally, the comparison between the means of the dependent variables (outcomes) between the two groups will be performed. Expected Results: It is hoped that this study can contribute with a better scientific basis for making clinical decisions about the use of cupping therapy in OAJ. In addition, it is expected that the protocol described in the present project can be used in new research in order to analyze the effectiveness of the resource.
