SUMMARY:

Smart Grids (SGs) are the evolution of the 20th-century electrical power grid. In SG, there is a doubled path of energy and information that generates an automated network capable of carrying out load balances and controlling the power supply remotely. The use of modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in SGs, such as the consolidated paradigm of cloud computing in conjunction with the Internet of Things (IoT) and the power of fifth-generation networks (5G), has driven this evolution.
Another emerging paradigm, called edge computing, has enabled this by harnessing the computational resources available at the network edges. The list of benefits that Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) proximity brings include greater agility of operation, cost reduction, and ultra-low communication delays. However, edge computing is still unexplored by utilities in the energy sector.
This dissertation departs from the Telco-Cloud trend, which enabled resource partitions (slices) to be offered on-demand in cloud data centers. Therefore, this dissertation advocates the perspective of allowing that utilities in the energy sector follow the trend to become cloud providers (denoted to as IoSGT-Cloud in this research), expanding the service catalog to unprecedented levels in the energy sector and enabling new services and business models. In this dissertation, the main contributions are: (i) proposing an IoSGT-Cloud reference architecture aimed at offering Cloud Slices as a service; (ii) designing an IoSGT-Cloud platform aimed at orchestrating and managing slices in the adjacent infrastructure; and, (iii) implementing a lab-premised prototype of the platform, as well as performing proof of concept and feasibility assessments.
