SUMMARY:

In smart city scenarios, environmental sensors and cameras installed in buildings and streets are the primary sources of sensing data. From these data, it is possible to infer several pieces of information that can feed multiple applications providing the current status of the whole city. A critical aspect in processing sensor data is related to systems that have to take some automatic action in a near real-time manner. They depend on data freshness, and computation time, otherwise, the processing results and activities become less valuable or even worthless. Besides, the prediction of a complex event of interest is made by observing the occurrence of several combined micro-events over time. These micro-events represent the changes in the data pattern coming from the sensors. To address these issues, in this work, we apply modern Machine Learning techniques and computational resources for Edge Analytics to process large-scale data streams within smart city scenarios. We define a distributed processing strategy based on multi-level information fusion for Edge and Fog nodes to extract knowledge from raw data, reducing network overhead and consequent delays. We also propose an architecture for extracting useful information to feed multiples applications that allows a complex event processing module infer and take automatic-actions about the events of a smart city.
