RESUMO:

Slope failure back analysis is often performed to improve knowledge about the parameters of the stability analysis model. Slopes stability is an important factor for succeeding of large geotechnical earthworks such as dams, highways, and others. In a failed dam slope, the failure surface may cross several soil layers, therefore many parameters need to be back analyzed. The accident that occurred in the upstream slope of the Engenheiro Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Dam (Açu Dam) at the end of its construction period was unexplored in regards to the analysis and comprehension of what caused the slope instability. In this work, it will be studied the historical case of landslide occurred in the Açu Dam in December 1981 by consulting and treatment of preexisting information. Back analysis, the main objective of this work, will be performed through the geometry data of the dam upstream slope before and after the failure. The software to be used for the slope stability analysis will be Slide 7.0, which belongs to the RocScience platform. At the end of this research we intend to define the possible average parameters of shear strength of the material and also to establish the most probable causes and mechanisms of the dam failure.
