SUMMARY:

The geopolitics of tourism in conservation areas is constituted by three main aspects, the rationality about the integration of communities, the neoliberal environmental conservation and the spatialization of tourism use, which bring together tensions within the population in poverty. In this context, conservation areas are the focus for understanding the geopolitics of tourism because it encompasses power relations where daily actions and external processes are concentrated, such as the actions of various agents in the restructuring of the territory. The thesis intends to understand the geopolitics of tourism and its reverberations on the organization process of the poor populations in the context of conservation areas in Mozambique, for example, the Limpopo National Park. It is also intended to analyse the history of the creation of conservation areas in Mozambique, considering whether the various agents have driven specific tourism policies to meet the demands of the poor. It also seeks to investigate the socio-spatial transformations and how the guarantee of the promotion of alternatives in the implementation of actions for the emancipation of the population for the internal organization of their territories is marked. From a methodological point of view, based on a qualitative approach, the aim is to carry out bibliographic research on the theme under study and documentary research, analysing Mozambican directive documents, such as national and management plans linked to tourism and conservation. Empirical research will be carried out with the aid of in-depth semi-structured interviews, with a view to gathering the feelings and reasoning of the people linked to the dynamics of the conservation areas. In addition to gathering information with local people and community leaders in order to obtain statements that relate to the lives of the subjects surveyed, it is planned to carry out interviews with state tourism and conservation bodies and partner Non-Governmental Organizations in order to identify their thoughts and concrete actions. It is expected to unveil contradictions and the set of beliefs that guide the tourist poles within the conservation context, considering poverty as a factor of socio-economic vulnerability that involves the structural context of the conservation areas. Equally, it is intended to address some key factors such as neoliberal environmental conservation, the ideologies influential in tourist concessions and public-private partnerships, the dominant logic of tourism development and the socio-spatial aspects of the communities as reflections of the need for debate from the geopolitics of tourism that considers emancipatory horizontal relations.
