SUMMARY:

As an alternative for the implementation of the tourist activity that values people, their history and culture, as well as that has been thought to promote improvement in the quality of life and responsible development, Community Based Tourism has become the object of study of the research on screen. It is worth mentioning, in this perspective, that we opted to use Storytelling because it is the “art of telling unforgettable stories”, which would allow us to understand the history and experiences from the perception of quilombolas in each community studied. Benchmarking, in turn, was chosen because it is considered a search tool for the best management practices of an activity or entity that is used as a model for implementation similar to the success case, adapting to the local reality. The academic relevance of this study came from the realization that there was no Brazilian Thesis developed with the theme of development and management of Community Based Tourism in the Seridó region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, making it an innovative and significant study for the valorization of Quilombola Communities as locations that receive tourism and that need greater visibility in the face of scientific research. Furthermore, the guiding question of this study was: how to use storytelling and benchmarking to promote cultural appreciation and the promotion of community-based tourism in Seridó Potiguar? The field research was carried out in the years 2018 and 2019, in addition to remote interviews (online) in the year 2020. It is also relevant to highlight that two Quilombola Communities in the Seridó Region were chosen because they are the best known and representative, which have been: Quilombola Negros do Riacho Community (Currais Novos) and the Boa Vista dos Negros Quilombola Community (Parelhas). Therefore, the general objective of this Thesis was: to investigate how the use of storytelling and benchmarking can promote cultural appreciation and the promotion of Community Based Tourism in Seridó Potiguar. Specifically, as a way to achieve the main objective of the research, the following objectives were elaborated: to understand the historical relevance of quilombola communities from the perspective of stakeholders; study about localities that develop Community Based Tourism; and, to propose a tourist itinerary for the quilombola communities of Seridó Potiguar. It was, therefore, a research with a qualitative approach, with a descriptive and exploratory character. For this, collection techniques were chosen for each listed objective, which were: documentary research, bibliographic research, interview, Collective Subject Discourse (DSC), participant observation, Participatory Rapid Diagnosis (DRP) and, more significantly, the storytelling and benchmarking. As analysis techniques, content analysis and discourse analysis were used. As main results, we can highlight that the socio-cultural peculiarities, experiences and heritage (material and immaterial) make quilombola communities attractive for the development of Community Based Tourism in Seridó Potiguar. In addition, it was found that it is possible to use successful models (benchmarking) in the implementation of Community Based Tourism for the elaboration and direction of tourism development strategies in other traditional communities of the Seridó Region and the State of Rio Grande do Norte, in addition to illustrating the possibility of carrying out a tourist itinerary in quilombola communities studied in a sustainable way, valuing local culture and history, involving residents in the choice of activities to be carried out when visiting, as well as Tourism would become an activity that values and it contributes to the understanding and construction of the idea of the “Eu Coletivo” and that would complement the income of the research subjects, improving - consequently - the living conditions in the quilombola communities in question. In the end, it can be concluded that storytelling and benchmarking are possible alternatives to be applied to the reality of Community Based Tourism in Seridó Potiguar, based on the principles of solidarity and economic development with equity.
