RESUMO:

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI), defined as the involuntary loss of urine, is one of the most common dysfunctions of pelvic floor muscles (PFM). It reaches 30 to 60% of the world's female population and is multifactorial. Women with UI tend to have difficulty controlling the MAP and may have very low contraction pressure, but no studies have been found to indicate whether MAP weakness is determinant on UI severity and quality of life in incontinent women. Objective: To compare the severity of UI and quality of life among women with UI who present with MAP weaknesses with those with strong MAP. Methodology: Observational study was performed with 37 women, in two groups according to the contraction capacity of the MAP, in the weak (n = 20) and strong (n = 17), in the city of Santa Cruz - RN. The MAP evaluation was done through vaginal palpation and perineometer, sociodemographic data, obstetric history, UI severity and quality of life were collected through an anamnesis record, 1-hour pad test, Incontinence Severity Index Questionnaire (ISI-Q) questionnaires and King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ). For data tabulation and analysis, the software Microsoft Excel® and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS, version 20.0 were used. Measures of central tendency, dispersion, and inferential tests were performed, with significance level p≤0.05. Results: When comparing women with weak MAP and strong MAP, no significant difference was found in the severity of UI (p=0.257) and in most domains of quality of life, except for sleep and disposition (p=0.048). Conclusion: The contraction capacity of these muscles is not a determinant factor for the severity of UI or quality of life of these women, with difference only in sleep and disposition.
