RESUMO:

Inflammatory molecules play an important role in atherosclerosis development, which is the primary origin of most common cardiovascular disorders. In search for molecules that complement the invasive techniques for diagnosis of atherosclerotic disease, we investigated the relationship between serum concentration of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin and MMP9 with the presence and extent of coronary lesion (Friesinger Index). Clinical data along with biochemical testing and serum concentration of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin and MMP9 were evaluated in 74 patients undergoing coronary angiography for the first time. VCAM-1 serum concentration was higher than 876 ng/mL in individuals with intermediate and major lesion (p < 0.001 and p = 0.020, respectively). Moreover, logistic regression analyses showed that these patients had an increased risk to have intermediate lesion (OR: 9.818, 95 % CI: 1.840-52.384, p = 0.007).  Interestingly, all individuals with major lesion had VCAM-1 concentration higher than 876 ng/mL. No association was found between the other serum proteins and Friesinger Index. Therefore, circulating VCAM-1 could be strongly associated with presence and extent of coronary lesion.
