RESUMO:

The intrinsic vulnerability integrated assessment of an aquifer is a very important tool in helping to establish public policies for the preservation, protection and sustainable use of groundwater sources. In this respect, the main purpose of this work is the development of vulnerability mappings from hydrogeophysical data, aiming to identify and delimitate areas with different protection levels of the layer overlying the Barreiras Aquifer, in the lower course area of Maxaranguape River. This purpose was based on the application of methodologies: longitudinal conductance, GOD and Aquifer Vulnerability Index (AVI). These methodologies are based on lithologic, hydraulic and geoelectric parameters, as well as the thickness of the unsaturated zone. This combined analysis of the natural susceptibility of an aquifer to contamination was developed basing on a geological-lithostratigraphic assessment, hydrogeology and geophysical data, as well as complementary bibliographic information on the area. The results show that the general domains delimited by vulnerability index are approximately consistent with each other. In general, the moderate, high to extremely high vulnerabilities classes encompass almost the entire area, outlining both the central area and the northern and southern of the study area, in accordance with values less than 3 of log c and 5 mS, in AVI and Longitudinal Conductance methodologies, respectively; and magnitudes greater than 0.4, according to the GOD method. In this context, the study area exhibits substantial sensitivity to contamination of its groundwater resulting essentially from the occurrence of sedimentary formations of high permeability and reduced depth of the water level, making easier the percolation and penetration of any contaminant to the aquifer domains.
