This study aims to transculturally translate and adapt a screening tool for domestic violence (DV) against the elderly in the city of Santa Cruz/RN, Brazil. The literature has shown limitations in the production of screening instruments for violence against the elderly in the Brazilian context, so it seems relevant to enable the use of these tools. The study as it is the translation and adaptation and validation of an instrument that does not have nor origin nor Brazilian validation will follow rigorous methodological criteria in order to guarantee a wide reliability and later be applied and used by other researchers to screen the DV against the elderly. The aim of this study was to transculturally translate and adapt the Hurt Insult Threatened Scream Scale to Portuguese Language in the Brazilian context. It is a cross-cultural translation and adaptation study that was developed following a methodological process that offers broad support for semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual requirements according to the methodological framework of Beaton et al. (2007). The study was developed in 5 steps: initial translation, synthesis of translations by a smaller committee, back-translation for original version, evaluation by a committee of judges and pre-test of final version in target audience. In the translation stages two versions of the scale were produced, one by one translator with English language qualification and the other by a health professional, who were used in stage IV, where a commission composed of 7 judges previously selected based on specific criteria And relevant to the thematic of the study that evaluated the semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual equivalence of the synthesis version as well as all the material originating from the initial stages to elaborate the pre-final version of the scale, and the last step was the pre-test With 30 elderly people in the city of Santa Cruz/RN in the month of December, 2016. Through the evaluation made by the judges committee, it was possible to detect words or expressions that caused doubts and divergences regarding semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual content Of the items, thus being analyzed based on the descriptive statistics, and modified those which had a discordance index of less than 80%. In addition to the pre-final version, an instrument for sociodemographic characterization and the Cognitive Proof of Leganés were applied. After data collection, they were organized and analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Based on the analyzes carried out by the judges, two items deserved to be readjusted, those that presented low expressiveness, in relation to the observed equivalences. It is concluded that the transcultural translation and adaptation process of the Hurt Insult Threatened Scream resulted in an adapted instrument for the Brazilian context.
