SUMMARY:

Education has presented two major challenges, including the full participation of students and the learning process. In this way, an exciting alternative is to explore aspects related to pop visual culture (films, TV shows, comics, the internet, etc.) that current students are constantly exposed to. Movies, comics, and animes, for example, which are part of the context of young people of generation Z, colloquially known as zoomers, may not produce scientific skills, but transmit information and this can be considered as a tool with great potential to be explored in education. An anime can mark the lives of young people through its story, transmitted messages, and/or soundtrack. As a result, it can be used as a start for future discussions, working as a prior knowledge organizer. Furthermore, it can create real or fictitious conceptual application situations. Despite the popularity of famous sagas such as Pokémon, Digimon, and Dragon Ball Z, among others, there are few reports about the potential of its application in the classroom. In this way, the goal of this research is to break one of the invisible barriers that surround the insertion of new strategies in teaching, to enhance the participation of individuals and the meaning of their learning. As a consequence, the research focuses on answering the question: “What are the contributions of the 4th episode of Dr. Stone in the learning process of chemical reactions?” The qualitative and inductive proposal has been developed at Colégio de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Nova Cruz city, involving 28 students from the 1st grade of high school, aged 14 and 15, a typical audience of generation Z. Students watch the episode and then build mind maps so that it is possible to infer the contributions of the tool in the learning, answering the research question. After analyzing the mind maps produced by the students, it can be observed that the use of Dr. Stone proved to be a potential tool for conceptual learning and that the idea attracts student participation. In contrast, it is important to emphasize that only anime does not guarantee learning, but the discussion can play a role in this process, contributing to the visualization of initially unobserved aspects and the development of concepts. With a focus on pop visual culture, the Educational Product is an anime, in Webtoon format, built collaboratively by the students and the teacher, covering chemical concepts, available on the network, being accessible to the public, and being able to be used by chemistry teachers.
