SUMMARY:

Several writers of Science Didactics address the potential of argumentation for science education and defend the use of educational practices that favor the development of argumentative skills. Debate situations are pointed out as argumentative practices important for teaching, especially in dialectical argumentation. A didactic strategy capable of fostering debate is the simulated jury (or simulated judgment), a particular case of role-play game that aims to discuss a controversial topic. However, there are few works in the literature this address the relationship between the simulated jury in Science Teaching and argumentation. Take into consideration, this paper proposes a case study on the simulated jury strategy based on the dialectical perspective of argumentation. Our general objective is to analyze the movement of construction of arguments, counterarguments and answers, and elements of dialectical argumentation, in a context of controversial teaching. As a controversial topic, the New Legal Framework for Basic Sanitation, Law No. 14,026, was chosen due to the controversies involved in its approval and implementation. To achieve the proposed objective activities based on the dialectical perspective were developed, and organized in the stages of preparation, performance, and evaluation of the simulated jury. The activities were applied in five meetings in the formative meetings of the participants of the Pedagogical Residency Program - Subproject Chemistry of UFRN (CAAE - Presentation Certificate of Ethical Appreciation 57847622.4.0000.5537). Data collection was carried out through audio recordings of the meetings, in addition to written materials produced by the students in the three stages (questionnaires, guided scripts, evaluation forms, and field diary). Data were analyzed using an analytical tool based on Bakhtinian elements. As per previous results, the potential of the simulated jury to enable the processes of perspective review, construction and reconstruction of knowledge, presuppositions of dialectical argumentation, from its preparation process to its actual realization stands out. The simulated jury, as a specific type of role-play game, provides its participants with role-playing and the chance to experience varying opinions. A priori, this shows us that the simulated jury is a discursive activity that, combined with the dialectical perspective of argumentation, has argumentative, epistemic, and cognitive potential, but the further deepening of the data is still necessary.
