SUMMARY:

Historical case studies involving women's participation in the development of scientific knowledge have been emphasized in current research agendas as a way of encouraging a more inclusive and diverse science. In this research we study the history of the natural philosopher Émilie du Châtelet, a woman of the French high aristocracy who lived during the first half of the 18th century and her Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du Feu (Dissertation on Nature and the Propagation of Fire) . This period is characterized by Enlightenment thought, in which the philosophical bases were against the participation of women in matters that were not domestic or religious, appealing to the argument that they were incapable of using reason, a natural characteristic attributed only to men. Our historical search, analysis, and narrative are guided by the poststructuralist feminist perspective on the sciences. We relate some aspects of the marquise's life and works to gender issues, within that perspective, amidst the marquise's biographical facts and works. The question that leads this research is: how such questions were reflected in your work of natural philosophy, especially your Dissertation on fire? For this, we appropriate the post-structuralist feminist discourses, questioning the notions of representation, the supposedly universal values of a Eurocentric culture of the Enlightenment, in particular the notion of rights that are justified in this philosophy, and bringing a new and controversial perspective to the historiography of the canonical sciences.
