SUMMARY:

Mosquitoes of the genus Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the protagonists in the spread of arboviruses throughout the world. Among the most frequent arboviruses in Brazil, stand out Zika (ZIKV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), Yellow Fever (FA) and the most reported, Dengue, which has four serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4) of the disease. The first reports of the mosquito are from the 19th century, which coincides with the period of the arrival of slave ships in the country, which, according to specialists, was the gateway to the Aedes, which originated in Africa, but was on its way to the Americas. Currently, the disease is controlled by the use of vaccine applied free of charge at public health posts. The disease has become an indicator of inequalities, considering that those most affected by the disease were black, poor, northeastern, unemployed and poorly educated women, thus raising a significant debate on reproductive health. In the same period, cases of CHIKV were reported. The virus can trigger neurological complications in people affected by the disease. Dengue is the most frequent arbovirus in Brazil, in 2015 alone, 1.5 million people were infected by the virus in the country. Campaigns developed, mainly by public bodies, are focused on eradicating the vector, centering on medical issues and excluding political, social, economic and environmental factors that favor the triggering of epidemiological outbreaks. Teaching plays a fundamental role in discussing these issues within the school environment. It is necessary to develop a democratic and dynamic knowledge that empowers students. Education for sustainability allows students to visualize the problems that surround society from a holistic approach. Therefore, this research aims to understand the knowledge and approaches given to concepts related to the group of viruses in the epidemiological context of arboviruses. The research methodology is qualitative and exploratory in nature. The results show that the approach to arboviruses within the classroom is still directed towards biological concepts of the disease. Furthermore, making the individual responsible, when we understand that the struggle is collective. In view of this, it is necessary to include a critical education for teachers so that they can empower their students as agents of change for the demands that have arisen in society.
