SUMMARY:

This research aims to describe the founding process of the Institute of Mathematics of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - IMUFRN and the development of its creation, expansion and consolidation of the Bachelor and Degree Course in Mathematics in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, over a period of ten years. This time frame begins in the year 1964, when the Colendo University Council - CONSUNI, approves its creation through Resolution No. 107/64-U of December 28, 1964 and ends after ten years of operation, with the Decree No. 74,211 of June 24, 1974, modifying the structure of UFRN, transforming the Institute of Mathematics - IM into Department of Mathematics - DM, as a sub-unit of the Center for Exact and Natural Sciences - CCEN. To carry out this investigation we employed the following methodological procedures: written historical sources (minutes, yearbooks, newsletters, graduation invitations, decrees, ordinances, resolutions, annual and quarterly reports), iconographic (photos and images) and oral (testimonies of involved in the process of creation and operation of IMUFRN). In the interaction of these sources, we sought to build a narrative having the theoretical assumptions of Mendes (2010, 2012), Magalhães (1999), Paolo Norsella and Ester Buffa (2013), among other authors as guiding. The partial results of this historical investigation initially point to two scenarios: The first scenario is the participation of the UFRN School of Engineering, as the scene of the first manifestations on the creation of a university institution focused on the teaching of mathematics in Rio Grande do Norte. , starring and idealized by teachers civil engineers of the Department of Mathematics of EEUFRN. The second scenario is the presence of the Faculty of Philosophy of Natal, an institution founded by the Rio Grande do Norte Teachers Association - APRN in 1954, which played a key role in the training of teachers for higher, secondary, professional and even normal education. in RN. From the year 1960, the Faculty of Philosophy of Natal, becomes unit of UFRN with the denomination of Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Natal - Fafi and establishing itself as one of the most important channels of dissemination of various undergraduate courses in the state, among them, Mathematics, which had its entry in Fafi, from the first entrance exam held by Comperve-UFRN in December 1965.
