TRANSLATION OF ANCIENT SOURCES AND FORMATION OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY BODY OF KNOWLEDGE: AN EXAMPLE FROM THE TREATY ON THE DETERMINATION OF THE KAZI-ZADE AR-RUMI
Trigonometry, Astronomy, Historical Sources.
This research aims to supply the history of mathematics as a research field. For this we present a Portuguese version of the Treaty on the determination of the sine of 1st - 15th century Arabic text produced by the Turkish astronomer Kazi-Zade. Our intention is to present to the Brazilian academic community a period of history that still lacks academic publications: medieval Islamic mathematics. In addition to translation, we present a mathematical study of the treaty, which sought to trace the paths taken by the astronomer to obtain the 1 ° sine. Thus, we analyze not only the mathematical production itself, but also the historical, philosophical context and the scientific contents used at the time. To aid our mathematical analysis a calculator was developed in LibreOffice software. We believe, therefore, that our translation, mathematical study, and calculator make a significant contribution to the field of mathematical history research, to pave the way for studies that revive medieval Islamic mathematics.
