RESUMO:

Literature in the area of scientific education shares the concern to teach science beyond a body of information (scientific content), addressing in the classroom, also, the characteristics related to scientific doing, that is, how science operates, is constructed , validated and communicated, as well as its epistemological peculiarities (meta-scientific content). In particular, the teaching of biological evolution is still the scene of many obstacles and controversies, involving teachers and students and they have difficulties in approaching this theme. Some of these difficulties are related to the lack of understanding of concepts of the theory itself, as well as to the few elaborated conceptions of the historical process of its production, among other aspects. Agreeing that discussions of epistemological nature may contribute to developing more informed understandings about biological evolution, we investigated the field journals of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) in order to identify elements that may contribute to discussions of meta-scientific content in evolution classes . The journals were written during his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle (1831-1836) and are available on the Darwin Online platform. From the reading of Darwin's diaries and autobiography as primary sources, and from the help of secondary sources, we were able to compose the scenarios of the episodes experienced by the young naturalist as he noted in his notebooks. Elements with potential to promote discussions on metascientific content were identified, in particular, observations, observations loaded with theory, elaboration of hypotheses, ideas of the scientific community and formation of the scientist. In our analysis, we seek the dialogue between these elements and the approaches of "family resemblance" and "themes and questions" of the nature of the sciences. In this way, we intend to contribute doubly to the teaching of evolution, both for an understanding of aspects of the theory itself and for a more refined understanding of science and its development.
