SUMMARY:

The central purpose of this research is to understand toponymy as a strategy for teaching school
Geography, being used as a didactic-pedagogical resource to work the concept of place in Geography
classes with high school students at the Anjo da Guarda Teaching Center, located in the neighborhood
of the same name in the Municipality of São Luís - MA. The investigative locus is made up of the streets
in the neighborhood to which the school belongs to the streets listed in the private addresses of First
Year students. In this sense, it was decided to explain about toponymy, conceptualizing and classifying it
based on Dick's studies (1990) to analyze cataloged place names. The students were encouraged and
challenged to learn the concept of place in order to establish a critical reading of this geographical
concept from a toponymic perception, allowing them to recognize geographical and socioeconomic
aspects of their experience. The results made it possible to understand a positive and interdisciplinary
observation of the theme and that there is a toponymic pattern between the act of naming public spaces
and the historical context in which names are attributed, the tribute to representatives of political power
and their families and religious elements physical elements of the region as a way of printing the
relations of power and possession.
