RESUMO:

Considerations based on research in the area of cartography teaching have shown that the procedures and didactic-pedagogical activities required by teachers in the high school classroom have, in most cases, been characterized by fragmented practices. This is due to, among other factors, restricted school time and space outside the classroom, causing the student difficulty in developing problem solving skills in the process of meaningful learning and in the domain of abilities related to cartographic knowledge. The present work proposes, analyses and discusses the use of a didactic sequence as an organizational methodology for the teacher's work and the student's learning, presenting strategies structured from problem-solving situations, whose purpose is to allocate teaching time and promote students' learning based on a plan that aims at their active participation in gaining knowledge. The research problem, apart from its commitment to structuring a didactic sequence for the teaching of school cartography, has as its main focus answering two central questions, namely: what contribution did the didactic sequence bring to the understanding of the concept of cartographic scale and which relationship can be established between this methodological procedure and the results of school learning achieved by the students. The study's didactic sequence was used, initially in a pre-testing phase, as an instrument of data collection and pedagogic intervention, and was applied as a strategy for the presentation of cartographic contents to 1st grade high school students from a public school in the municipality of Mossoró (RN). Brousseau's Theory of Educational Situations (TSD) (2008) was used as a foundation for the interpretation of the pilot experiment, and also served as a basis for planning and organizing the action, enabling us to discuss aspects related to the presentation of contents and acquisition of skills and competences by the students. Therefore, in this study, we used the didactic sequence as a descriptive-exploratory research procedure and as a final dissertation proposal of the professional master's degree in geography, with the aim of describing the contribution of this procedure to the understanding of the concept of cartographic scale, analysing its relation to the students' learning and approaching it as an instrument for the mastery of cartographic content from the perspective of teaching and autonomous learning, without disregarding, however, the educative and instructive mediation of the teacher for the constructive elaborations of the students.
