AREA: Nutrição
SUMMARY:

Changes in food safety levels may reflect impairments in functional mobility and strength and quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the association of the occurrence of Food Insecurity with Functional Mobility among older adults. It is a cross-sectional study nested within the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) cohort. It was done in the third wave, carried out in 2016 in Kingston and St. Hyacinthe, Canada (North America); Tirana, Albania (Europe) and Manizales, Colombia and Natal, Brazil (South America), totaling 1500 older adults. The food insecurity frequency was verified using the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA).  The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) was used to assess functional mobility. The independent variables were handgrip strength, measured with a manual dynamometer, and the Body Mass Index (BMI). The results showed that the food insecurity frequency was higher in underdeveloped countries, with up to 30% of the population with some degree of Food Insecurity. When analyzing the data, we observed that older adults with Food Insecurity had lower scores in all stages of the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Also, a higher proportion of them had disability mobility (PR: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.45 – 2,36). There was no association between food insecurity and handgrip strength (p=0.059) and BMI (p=0.326). We concluded that cities located in Albania, Colombia, and Brazil present the highest occurrences of Food Insecurity, and disability mobility was positively associated with food insecurity.
