Introduction: The handover (shift change) is a critical moment in the routine of health professionals, especially in nursing, requiring effective communication to ensure favorable outcomes and patient safety. Failure in this process compromises the continuity of the Care Plan and the quality of assistance. Given the need for improving the quality of care, this study aimed at the development and validation of a tool to standardize interdepartmental communication within the nursing team. Objective: To validate a tool designed for effective communication by the nursing team during interdepartmental patient transfers in a teaching maternity hospital. Method: This was a methodological study focused on the development and validation of a communication tool for the nursing team during interdepartmental patient transfer in a maternity hospital in the Northeast of Brazil. The study phases consisted of a literature review, the construction of the tool (adapted from the SBAR model), and content and appearance validation, performed by specialists using the Delphi technique in two rounds. Data analysis was conducted by calculating the Content Validity Index (CVI); items with a CVI 80% were considered valid. Results: The first validation round demonstrated Content Validity Indices (CVI) that ranged between 77.8% and 100% for the criteria of clarity, relevance, and pertinence. Qualitative suggestions from the experts subsidized the refinement of items, such as patient identification, the inclusion of complete vital signs, and the reformulation of fields for greater objectivity. The second round confirmed the effectiveness of the adjustments, resulting in a CVI of 100% for all topics and criteria, which confirms the consistency and final adequacy of the tool. Conclusion: The interdepartmental communication tool for nursing was considered valid in content and appearance, constituting a standardized and consistent instrument to promote effective communication and contribute directly to the improvement of service quality. Its practical application has the potential to minimize errors, ensure continuity of care, and increase patient safety in maternity environments
